A Detailed Look At Different Types Of Motivation

There are various types of motivation that involve basic psychological reasons that result in a person's behavior or actions.  They are the particular factors that essentially cause a person to behave in a specific manner or achieve certain goals.  Different types of motivation can result in personal benefits, group benefits or work benefits, that may not have any positive rewards on the person but rather the company or those around.

Basic Or Primary Motivation

Basic or primary motivation pertains mainly to motives that are involved with your needs to achieve self-preservation.  This can include needs like thirst and hunger, sex, warmth, avoidance of pain and any other basic motive that would influence your behavior at a very general level.

Secondary Motivation

When examining types of motivation, this form is referred to commonly as “learned motivation” and can differ greatly from one particular person to another.  Psychology studies prove that this motivational form is reliant on your own priorities and goals in your life as well as your personal sense of values.

Much of this type of behavior that is derived from these studied types of motivation are conscious ones.  Therefore, you have to consciously desire some type of particular result or goal and ultimately behave in such a way that will result in bringing you closer to that goal.  Extrinsic and intrinsic motivation are the two basic types of motivation that make up this category.

Competence Motivation

This is a personal drive to be incredibly good at something.  This could be work related, to produce high quality workmanship or sports related when you are very competitive to be the best.  Competence motivation comes from either using certain skills that you already have or practicing until you achieve a level of skills that makes you better than others.

Affiliation Motivation

When studying types of motivation, affiliation motivation is a technique that you use on others around you, not yourself.  It is a way that you relate to other people on a social level.  When you compliment others they will usually work in a favorable manner to achieve a goal that you are aiming for.  For example, a boutique clothing store manager may compliment a sales associate on what a fabulous job they did yesterday handling a hard sale.  In return, this will make the sales associate feel good about themselves, work harder and result in more sales for the store.  Complimenting others psychologically makes that person want to live up to the compliment in future situations which results in positive benefits.
