Facts About Different Types of Bananas

There are so many different types of bananas that you never could have imagined them.  The banana is one of the most popular fruits in the world, and it actually comes from an herb, not a tree as many people think.  Bananas are also one of the healthiest foods in the world, offering large amounts of fiber, potassium, and many other vitamins and minerals.

In all, there are over 1,000 different types of bananas all around the world.  They all have different flavors and appearances.  Some can be eaten raw, while others must be cooked in order to become edible.  Some bananas also contain a lot more starch than other types of bananas.  Some of them make better desserts, while others are the perfect topping for breakfast foods.

One of the most popular types of bananas in the world is the Cavendish banana.  This is typically the kind of banana you’ll find at the grocery store in the United States.  Chiquita is the world’s largest banana producer, and some people refer to the Cavendish banana as the Chiquita banana.

Another one of the most popular types of bananas is the Plantain banana.  This type of banana is also commonly found in the United States.  It doesn’t have as much sugar in it as other types of bananas do, and Plantain bananas also must be cooked before they can be eaten.  Plantains grow in tropical climates, and they often look completely black at the grocery store because fully ripened Plantains are black in color.

The red banana is easily recognized by its purplish skin color.  It’s got a hint of raspberry flavor, and it contains a lot more beta carotene and vitamin C than other types of bananas.  Another popular type of banana is the Burro.  This type of banana is unusual because it’s round with square ends.  It’s smaller and more rectangular, and it has black spots when it’s ripe.    Burro bananas are perfect for either cooking or eating raw.

The Manzano banana is also very unique because it tastes a bit like strawberries and apples.  Some people refer to this variety as the apple banana.  This type of banana also turns black when it’s ripe, and it feels heavier than other varieties.  It’s grown in Asia, Central and South America, Africa, and the Caribbean.

Probably the cutest banana of them all is the Baby or Nino banana.  It’s only about three inches long, and it’s got a very sweet flavor.  The Nino banana is an excellent source of vitamin B6, and the uses for this type of banana are endless, even extending to grilling, baking, and broiling.  The Nino banana is often more expensive than other types of bananas.

How many different types of bananas have you tried?  Some of the world’s most well-known chefs have been known to experiment with all varieties of bananas, creating some exquisite eats that are sure to have you asking for more!  Just knowing about all the different varieties is half the battle of learning to experiment with them.
